Here’s how to organize a betting game to keep your guests engaged and entertained from start to finish at your Kentucky Derby Party.

Decisions to Make First Before Setup

Before the excitement of your Kentucky Derby Party begins, you need to make a few key decisions to ensure the betting game runs smoothly. First, decide on a fixed bet amount for the Win, Place, and Show bets. Setting a uniform bet amount helps to keep the game fair and enjoyable for all your guests, regardless of their betting experience.

Next, determine how many races you want to include in your betting game. While the main event is the Kentucky Derby itself (usually Race 12), betting on earlier races can extend the fun throughout the day. Finally, consider the number of guests you’ll be preparing for. Knowing your party’s size will help you adequately prepare the right amount of betting cards, pens, and instructional materials, ensuring that each guest can participate comfortably in the festivities. These initial decisions will lay the groundwork for a well-organized and memorable Derby day.

Easy Setup of Betting Station

As a Kentucky Derby Party host, prepping your betting station with all the essentials will ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all your guests. Start by selecting your betting cards; you can purchase a hard copy pad or download some with a sign directly from the EnFete site, catering to the festive theme of your party.

Set up three buckets to collect the Win, Place, and Show bets for each race, allowing easy organization and clear separation of the stakes. Provide printed betting instructions catering to beginners and seasoned bettors, ensuring everyone understands the rules and feels included in the fun. Equip your betting station with plenty of pens or pencils for filling out cards, and don’t forget to have a list of the races and the names of the horses running in each race, which you can typically obtain from the official race website. This thorough setup enhances the betting experience and helps keep the event orderly and exciting for everyone involved.

You could also provide a list of the current odds for each horse, which you can find here.

Race: Start by entering the number of the specific race you are betting on. The Kentucky Derby is typically Race 12 on Derby Day. Verify the race number on your program or race website.

Win: In this section, you will write the number/name of the horse you think will finish first. Check the racing website or program for the horse’s number and odds.

Place: In the “Place” section, you enter the number/name of the horse you believe will finish in first or second place. This bet pays out if your chosen horse finishes first or second.

Show: Here, you will list the number/name of the horse you expect to finish third. A show bet pays if your horse finishes in any of the top three positions.

Wager: Indicate the amount of money you want to bet in this section. Each type of bet (Win, Place, Show) needs to have the wager amount specified if you are betting different amounts on each; in our game here, we have a set bet for each, so this is the total line for all the bets. For example, if you’ve set the bet at $2 each, and they bet on Win, Place and Show, they will write $6 here, $2 if they only bet on Win, and $4 if they bet on Win and Place.

Bettor: This section contains the name of the person placing the bet. This helps track bets and distribute winnings accurately.

Additional Tips
Double-Check Your Entries: Before submitting your betting card, ensure all entries are correct—mistakes cannot be rectified once the bet is placed.
Know the Minimum Bet: Know the minimum bet amount for each type of wager at the party.
Consider Betting Strategies: Some bettors like to place “across the board” bets where they bet the same horse to Win, Place, and Show. This increases the chances of winning something if the horse performs well.

By following these instructions, you can confidently fill out your betting card and enjoy the thrill of the Derby. Remember, betting on horse races involves risk, so gamble responsibly.

Rules for Distributing Winnings at Your Derby Party

This is the back side of our Instructions Printable, which you can find in the shop here.

Are you gearing up for a thrilling Kentucky Derby Party in 2024? Whether you’re a seasoned race fan or just looking for an exciting addition to your event, here’s a simple how-to to setup a betting game. Betting can significantly amplify the fun at your Derby Party!

Collecting Bets:
Each guest who wishes to participate in betting should fill out a betting slip with their chosen horse(s) for Win, Place, and Show.
Specify a uniform betting amount for all participants to keep it simple and inclusive, such as $1, $2 or $5 per bet.
The host collects the money and records each bet carefully (on slips with the bettor’s name.)

Winnings Pool:
All the collected money from the bets forms the winnings pool.
There should be separate pools for Win, Place, and Show bets if participants are allowed to bet on different outcomes.

Distributing the Winnings:
Win Pool: The total money in the Win pool is distributed to the guests who correctly chose the winning horse. If more than one guest chose the winner, the pool is divided equally among them.
Place Pool: The total money in the Place pool is shared among the guests whose selected horses finished first or second. If several guests win, distribute the pool equally among them.
Show Pool: The Show pool is divided among those who picked horses finishing in any of the top three positions. Again, if multiple guests win, the money is split equally.

No Winners:
If no one picks the winning horse for any of the categories (unlikely for Show, but possible for Win and Place), the host can either return the bets or roll the pool over to a next event or another betting game at the party.

Payouts:
The host should handle payouts immediately after the results of the Derby are official to keep the excitement alive.
It helps to have someone assist in calculating the divisions to ensure accuracy and transparency.

Transparency:
Consider displaying the bets and what each pool contains to all participants to ensure transparency.
Announce each step as you calculate and distribute winnings to keep everyone informed.

Additional Tips:
Have Fun:
Remember, the goal of betting at a home party is to add excitement and enjoyment to the event, not high-stakes gambling.
Responsibility: Ensure all participants are comfortable with gambling and aware of the betting amounts.
Legal Considerations: Keep in mind the legal aspects of gambling in your locality, even in a casual setting like a home party.
By setting clear rules and maintaining transparency, you can ensure that your home Derby betting is a fun and fair highlight of the party!
